It is a fact that each week Foodlink disposes of nearly a thousand pounds of bread. Even after the soup kitchens and food panties take what they can, a lot of it goes to waste. Armed with this information ACF Rochester went to work to see if alternative uses could be found. On Sunday morning August 21, 2005 members Duff Rund, Brad Butler and yours truly along with Fairport foods teacher Janet Marr gathered in the kitchen at Exxon Mobil in Macadon and tackled one hundred pounds of previously unused bread. In a few fun filled hours twenty hotel pans of bread pudding were prepped. Some were traditional fruit and custard. Some were slightly more gourmet with fresh blueberries and lemon zest. Some cheeseburgers and Rochester style hot sauce inspired a Chee-burg-garbo-everything bread pudding to be served with extra sauce. The final inspiration of the day was to make a peanut butter custard and blend in the cubed bread and then dot the pans with strawberry jelly.
The scene then switches to Monday afternoon and the Rochester Public Market. It was the third Festival of Food. As an alternative to our usual monthly meeting some of our members gathered to help Foodlink with their annual fundraiser. We decorated the double sized booth with large baskets, plants, pedestals and with some help from Chef Don's shoe we proudly hung our chapter banner. Duff arrived with pans of hot bread pudding and we started serving sampler sized portions and explaining why we had chosen to make bread pudding. We had the opportunity to introduce ourselves to a lot of Rochester residents and to further our partnership with Foodlink. My thanks go to all who attended; my sympathy to those who could not attend. Note to those who were not there...it was ALL about food and fund raising …no minutes, no reports, no discussions of by-laws or newsletters. Just food
The September meeting is earlier in the month than usual. We will gather at The Hospitality House, Rt. 441 east of Rt. 250 in Penfield. The meeting will be called to order at 7:00. We have some important things to accomplish that night. Mike Vasile, CEC, AAC our chef de cuisine for the COTY dinner needs four or five members to step up and volunteer to do an action station at the reception before the dinner. We also have traditionally asked members to donate at least one hundred pieces of passable hors d' oeuvres. Please do your part to make the Chef of the Year Dinner the event we, as ACF Rochester, can be proud to present to the public. We also need a brigade on Sunday to prep and serve the dinner. E-mail Mike at Chefvasile@aol.com and let him know how you will help.
All tickets should be accounted for by that night. Those of you with tickets please bring in the money to cover the sales. Those who still need invitations sent call me at Shadow Lake 385-2011.
At the September meeting we have some important chapter business to attend to. We need to start the annual election process. In this "off year" election we will nominate and elect one Chapter Trustee for a three-year term. We will also decide on the members who will compete in October for the title of 2006 Chapter Chef of the Year. Please do not leave these important decisions to ten or twelve people and forfeit your voice in chapter operations. This last year the board meetings have been in and out in less than two hours. That is not a lot of extra time for a chance to have a voice in the operation of your chapter.
See you soon,
Chef Paul
Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity. ~Voltaire
